Background

Education is a fundamental human right and an essential tool for achieving the objectives of equality and sustainable development. Education is a key to the growth of the countries development. Supporting education through empowering student or young generation is the most important activity that assures development of the country. Hence empowering youth through inovative and inclusive education will increase their competitiveness in their innovatiocarrier, and employment. 

Problem in Ethiopia

  

More than 80% of the population of the country leave in Rural areas, where there is luck of infrastructure, such as Electricity, High school in nearest distance, (64% of high school students are out of school after grade 8th, because there is no high school in reachable distance), No /or expensive internet connection to access reference materials, Luck of qualified teacher, no or few reference books in the library; hard copy text books given one to many, or not reach in time because of the time it takes to print abroad, imported and distributed every year. 

The plasma video tutorial, which was designed and implemented with big investment, in high schools to support student to have better education through centrally broadcasted television, was not supporting students as it was intended to be. The luck and interruption of electricity, the luck of manpower to maintain when it needs maintenance, and its nature of asynchronous, makes plasma not to be used in most schools. The report presented on the meeting, told that only 34 % of plasma televisions are functional in the implemented schools. 

Our intervention and solution.

   

To solve this all rounded problem that excludes majority of students from being competitive both in the job opportunity and joining university, we presented a project idea to Ministry of Education (MOE) to develop a localized curriculum based e-solution system to high schools. Having accepted and signed MOU with MOE, the development of curriculum based digital resource was started. 

  1.  All the digital text books and video tutorial prepared by Ministry of education were collected and developed in a web based format, was loaded on the tablet to be used anywhere and anytime without need for connection, with affordable price to all. 
  2.  To bridge the digital gap, an offline Server with up to date related reference materials, video tutorials, simulations, virtual labs, educational applications, Learning management system and all high school and preparatory college curriculum resources were also developed to give access to additional materials to the student. 
  3. As a means of connectivity between the tablet and the server a wireless access point was installed to cover the school compound so that student can access them for additional resource while they are in the school compound. 

This project is piloted in two schools and have support from regional education bureau and MOE, to be implemented in more higher schools and expanded to junior schools in the future.
